Annualized return is the constant yearly growth rate that connects the initial and final values. It does not show volatility or account for intermediate cash flows.

Formula

Annualized return (%) = [(Final value ÷ Initial value)^(1 / Years) − 1] × 100

Worked example

An investment grows from $1,000 to $1,500 over 2 years, with no extra cash flows.

Total return is 50.00%; annualized return is 22.47%.

How to use

  1. Enter initial and final values on a consistent net-of-fees basis.
  2. Enter the holding period in years.
  3. Calculate total and annualized return; do not use this model when deposits or withdrawals occur between endpoints.

Frequently asked questions

Is this CAGR?

Yes. For an investment with no intermediate cash flows, this annualized return is the compound annual growth rate.

What if I added more money?

The simple endpoint formula would treat deposits as gains. Use a cash-flow-aware measure such as money-weighted return for that situation; this tool does not calculate it.
